Remember those years when Nigerians held a protest against the price of fuel, shooting up for N75 to N150? Little did we know that a liter of fuel will rise between N700-N800. Not to mention the general rise in the cost of our daily edibles, one can only hope it gets better, and this is why we require a protest. As citizens of Nigeria, we have a voice, and our voice needs to be heard, but we need to do this with great caution and control. This is why we have put together 7 steps to help you stay safe and well-protected.
Stay around close and trusted friends
Safety in numbers! Don’t head out alone. Rally your friends, classmates, or colleagues who share your passion. Agree on a meeting point beforehand and have a designated “check-in” time via text or call if things get separated.
Conduct a deep research on the protest organizers and the best route to take
Is it a well-established organization leading the protest? Knowing the route beforehand can help you stay oriented and avoid getting caught in unexpected situations. This also helps you plan your exit strategy if needed.
Go prepared-Go Equipped
Go along with reusable water bottles, flasks, snacks, and comfortable shoes. Sunscreen, a hat, and a mask are also smart choices.
Share your location with loved ones via WhatsApp
Sharing your location is entirely needed in this case, just in case you miss your way, close friends can easily track your mobile devices to find you.
Dress for the occasion
Avoid putting on anything that restricts movement or compromising, because you need to move easily in case you need to be athletic or run for cover. Opt for comfortable, closed-toe shoes you can walk in for long periods. Long sleeves and pants offer some protection from sun, tear gas, or other irritants.
Do not go along with work or important devices
Leave valuables at home. Avoid carrying heavy bags or backpacks. Don’t bring flammable items or anything that could be construed as a weapon. Sticking to peaceful protest tactics keeps everyone safe.
